This term refers to Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. You will also see the term English Language Learners (ELLs) or English as a Second Language (ESL) used. All of these terms refer to the same group of students. Students who qualify for LEP services are defined as (1) individuals who were not born in the United States or whose native language is a language other than English; (2) individuals who come from environments where a language other than English is dominant; and (3) individuals who are American Indian/Alaska Native and who come from environments where a language other than English has had a significant impact on their level of English language proficiency; and who, have sufficient difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language.
There are many procedures in place at schools to ensure that Limited English Proficient students are receiving the appropriate teachers and support for academic achievement. This site hopes to examine the needs of these students, and the latest research; you can then make a decision on how your school can better meet the needs of this special population. |
